Educator Tax Deductions

 

Attention Teachers!

K-12 educators can deduct up to $250 of unreimbursed expenses including Covid-19 protective items.

You are eligible as a taxpaying educator if you are a teacher, instructor, counselor, principal, or aide that works with K-12 students. You must also have worked a minimum of 900 hours during the school year in a school that provides elementary or secondary education according to state law.

Some examples of expenses you can deduct as an educator include professional development course fees, books, supplies, computer equipment (including related software and services), other equipment and materials used in the classroom, etc.

In regards to COVID-19 you may deduct expenses related to face masks, disinfectant for use against COVID-19, hand soap, hand sanitizer, disposable gloves, materials to enforce social distancing, air purifiers, and other items recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be used for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19.
